Visit a beaver dam
The beaver ("amiskw" in Atikamekw) is not only the emblem of Canada with the maple leaf, but it is greatly respected by the Natives of Atikamekw. There was a time when the beaver was primarily popular for its fur quality: time of the Fur Trade with the Hudson's Bay Company to supply European demand on hats. Atikamekw people with the Crees were at the Migiskan trading post and transported, via the famous "canoe brigades", furs to Rupert House and then by boat via James Bay and Hudson Bay to England. Today the beaver is especially popular for its meat quality. While staying at the Matakan site, your Atikamekw guides will show you one or several beaver dams.
